Pochettino’s Clearest Message Yet – Spurs Would Be “Naive” & “Stupid” Without A New Plan

|

With all eyes on the Premier League curtain closer against Everton on Sunday afternoon, Tottenham Hotspur manager has again been tasked with questions about his future at Tottenham Hotspur.

With Pochettino himself largely joking that if we lift the Champions League trophy this season having reached the final, he could well quit as he couldn’t top that achievement, the gaffer is already on record talking about how the club need to change now to build on the new White Hart Lane Stadium and our current success.

Quoted by the BBC ahead of the game, Poch admitted that he would be ‘naive’ and ‘stupid’ to think that we could continue to challenge in the top four and reach the latter stages of the CL competition if the club continued to run as it has done in the last few years – especially as the remaining top six clubs will naturally strengthen over the summer.

“I am not open to start a new chapter with no plan, with no clear idea, with not being transparent. I know very well how this business works. And we know we need to operate in a different way – that doesn’t mean to spend more or less money. But if we expect every season to be in the final of the Champions League, we need to create a plan. And the plan maybe is different to what has happened in the last five years. If we believe that if we operate in the same way that we have operated in the last five years we are going to be every season in the final of the Champions League, and in the top four and competing against projects like Liverpool or Manchester City or Manchester United, I think we are very naive.”

Adding.

“If you want to expect the same from Liverpool, from Manchester City or Manchester United and Chelsea, and you put the same expectation on Tottenham, give me different tools to work. If not, I see the people working in the same way, in the future I’m going to be this guy. I am the most stupid person to work.”

Most fans agree we keep punching above our weight given the relative spending mix and this season has been phenomenal when you consider no new players to strengthen the group and then the injuries we’ve had across the year.

Poch clearly wants to kick on now, we have to hope he can.
